OCTOBER OUTING ~ ROSS RIVER FIREFLY DISPLAY ~ SUNDAY EVENING 19TH OCTOBER.
The outing will be on Sunday week, 19th October, and will be an evening with the fireflies that display across Ross River at this time every year. They start appearing around dusk and are very active until about 7.30pm, when the numbers of flashing lights seem to decrease. Our outing will be only 2 days before the new moon, so the moonlight won’t be bright enough to significantly dim the fireflies’ flashing.
Meeting time and place: At 6:00pm, at Weir Park, which is on the Annandale side of Aplin’s Weir. There is some parking available in Weir Park and from there we will walk downstream along the bike path for about 10 minutes to our viewing position, which will be below Sandbek Street. Those not wanting to walk could drive to Sandbek Street and park there, but it’s a narrow street and won’t take many cars.
Transport: People will provide their own transport to the meeting place, but please email us if you need a lift.
What to bring: Shoes for walking on a bike path and on grass, a rug or chair to sit on, a *TORCH* (it will be very dark when we leave), binoculars (for a great view of more distant fireflies), mosquito repellent, hat (lapwings in the area might have chicks to protect), and your choice of non-alcoholic drinks and nibbles to munch while we watch.
