Cungulla, situated on Bindal country, is a small township south-east of Townsville that stretches out behind the beach, north of where the Haughton River empties into Bowling Green Bay. Access is from the Cape Cleveland Road (the one which leads out to AIMS). To coincide with the falling tide, which might make for some good sightings of waders and other inter-tidal life, we will meet a little later in the morning than usual. There is a shady park behind the beach, at the end of Sword Street, and this would be a pleasant place to check out bush-birds over lunch. (NB No toilets at the park, but they are available at the Community Centre as you drive in)

How to get there: Travel south on the Bruce Highway to the well-signposted AIMS turn-off onto Cape Cleveland Road. Distance from the city centre to this turn-off is 37km, or just under 30km from Fairfield Central Shopping Centre. Continue along Cape Cleveland Road for approx 3km to the Cungulla turn-off (Carty Road) on the right.

Meeting time and place: Meet at 11.30am at the Cungulla turn-off. We will drive the 10km to Cungulla in a well-spaced convoy, but anyone coming later (or wanting to go out a bit earlier) should find their way quite easily.

What to bring: Water (and plenty of it), sunscreen, insect repellant. Wear shady hat, appropriate footwear and preferably long sleeves and pants – there are likely to be some sandflies. Lunch and other snacks as required, plus cameras, binoculars or whatever you like to take on such walks.

If you need a lift, or can offer a lift, please email usA good rendez-vous point for car-poolers would be Fairfield Central shopping centre, outside main entrance (adjacent to Australia Post) – parking row 10.
