Join us by the river to get our 2021 field outings program up and … er .. walking! We will stay close to home this month, hoping we won’t get quite the deluge that washed out our first outing in 2020!
We will follow the river from the park downstream to Aplin’s Weir – however, as far as possible we will avoid the bike path, often busy with cyclists, joggers and dog-walkers, and follow the ‘unofficial’ footpath that hugs the river and mostly has good shade cover. tt will also allow us to view the post-flood regrowth which sprang up once the floodwaters subsided in 2019 and which local residents have protected, nurtured, mulched and weeded with good support from the City Council. A wonderful example of a spontaneous community project which, week by week, is enhancing and extending the natural habitat for birds and other wildlife.
The last part of the walk will take us through the Bush Garden to Aplin’s Weir, a good point to look for waterbirds both up and downstream. We will then return the way we came, hopefully in time to gather back at the park for a chat and a cuppa. This would be a good opportunity to discuss plans for the coming year and to hear some of your ideas – not just for trip destinations (though suggestions for these are always welcome) but perhaps for ways we can extend our reach, either through our own initiatives or by working in with other groups.
Meeting Time and Place: 8.30am at Rossiter Park, Aitkenvale. This park lies on the Aitkenvale bank directly opposite the Palmetum. For those who don’t know it, this is a pleasant shady park, with a number of picnic tables, some with shelter roofs. Access is along Leopold Street, turning down either Keneally or Chambers Streets (see map). There is a designated carpark as well as roadside parking.
What to bring: Hats (and umbrellas?), mossie repellant, sunscreen, water, your choice of snacks and drinks. The mossies were not very noticeable when I walked this way recently but this could change! Long sleeves and long pants may be advisable.
We should finish the walk by midday or earlier, but people with other commitments can of course join us (we should be easy to find) or leave at any point.
