Kelso Borrow Pits Walk – Sunday 19th March; AGM – Sunday 26th March

MARCH OUTING ~ KELSO BORROW PITS ~ SUNDAY 19th MARCH.

This month’s outing will be on next Sunday, 19th MARCH, and will be a walk on the gravel track around the so-called ‘Borrow Pits’ beside the Ross River Dam at Kelso. The lake is located on Riverway Drive (formerly Upper Ross River Road) and is just a few metres past the huge towers supporting the power transmission line that crosses Ross River, ~700m below Ross River Dam.

Meeting time and place: At 9:00 am, at the signed entrance to the Borrow Pits. A gravel road leads to a shelter inside, beside the lake, but that road is likely to be boggy and parking space near the shelter is very limited. Outing attendees are advised to park near the signed entrance, on the gravel strips either side of Riverway Drive, or in the parking spaces a little further on beside Ross Park (where there are toilets).

Transport: People will provide their own transport, but please email us if you need a lift.

What to bring: Good shoes for walking on a flat track, morning tea, *WATER*, gear for birdwatching and photography, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent. Given the time of the year, a raincoat and/or umbrella could also be handy!

Bug Hunt program: People with the iNaturalist app on their phones are encouraged to photograph any ants they see on the trip. The Bug Hunt program (Invasive Species Council) hopes to build a profile of known native and invasive ants on The Atlas of Living Australia.

SUNDAY 26th MARCH: Townsville Branch AGM.

Financial members have already been advised of our AGM, which we will hold again at the Palmetum Savannah Shelter in the grassed area on the south-west corner of the lagoon at the Townsville Palmetum. The meeting will start at 10am.
