MAY 2022 BRANCH UPDATE

Welcome to our newest member, Gareth Moorhead, who re-joined us last month after a long absence ‘down south’ and hopes to now spend more time in Townsville  Hope the unseasonal rain and temperature haven’t dampened your return to the ‘dry’ tropics, Gareth!

May Outing 22/05/22

This will be an outing of choices because Sunday 22nd coincides with Open Day at the Rowes Bay Sustainability Centre and the official opening of the Bush Garden Nursery which a number of members will be involved in.

Rowes Bay Wetlands. Meet at 9.00 at the wind turbine in front of the Sustainability Centre. We will spend about an hour on the boardwalk there, before driving to meet at !0.15 at the main gate of the Town Common just down the road. We will then car pool (if people are happy to) and check out various sites depending on the birds. There may be some walking.

People wishing to then return to the Sustainability Centre will have time as the open day runs from 10.00 – 2.00 but the limited free plants and the pizzas might be gone.

Town Common 10.15 main gate. Those who’d prefer a later start can skip the Rowes Bay wetlands and meet us there.

Bring binocs, water and snacks. There may be mozzies at both sites.

Field outing reports March and April: You can read the reports of our last two outings by clicking on these links: Cape Cleveland creek (March) and Woodstock (April).

Chalumbin Wind Farm

There has been increasing opposition to this and other renewable energy proposals as people become aware of the massive destruction of wildlife habitat involved. Renewables are vital to transition from coal-fired power, but should they mean massive amounts of land clearing and wildlife dead or displaced? Are there no areas available that have been cleared in the past?

Watch these two short videos by Steven Nowakowski, see what you think.
