NOVEMBER OUTING ~ ETHEL CK FALLS ~ SUNDAY 25th NOVEMBER.
Our November trip will be a walk to Ethel Creek Falls at Paluma. Ethel Creek flows into Crystal Creek and the base of the falls can be reached by taking the ~2km walk to Cloudy Creek, rock-hopping across there, and then walking a further 2km through the rainforest. However, we won’t be going that way – we will walk down a much shorter and less-frequented track that branches off the road to Paluma Dam and will take us to the top of the falls. From there, more adventurous people can rock-hop across Ethel Creek and use the installed rope to assist their descent to the pool at the bottom of the falls. The vehicle track is a good gravel road that won’t be a problem for 2WD vehicles, and the walking track is well made, good underfoot and has the same up-and-down bits as the other tracks around Paluma. Brisk walkers will get to the falls easily in 30-40 min and those who stop to bird-watch, take photographs and to puzzle over plants will take a teensy bit longer….
Meeting time/place: We will meet at 9.00 am at the Village Green in Paluma Village, leaving from there at 9:15 am to travel to where the track starts, several km out of Paluma. To get to Paluma, turn left off the Bruce Hwy into Barrett Road, just north of Ollera Creek and, about 4 km further, take the signed turnoff left to Mt Spec/Paluma. The Paluma Village Green is the park at the intersection of Mount Spec Road and Smith Crescent. Allow about 1.5 hr to reach Paluma Village from the northern outskirts of Townsville.
What to bring: Morning tea, lunch (for those intending to stay that long), WATER*, birdwatching and walking gear (stout shoes essential), insect repellent, and whatever else you might need for a walk in rainforest and maybe a swim. Email us if you have any questions.
*Paluma Village has issues with its water supply at the moment so please don’t rely on obtaining drinking water from taps at the Village Green.
