NOVEMBER FIELD TRIP ~ PALUMA DAM ~ SUNDAY 19th NOVEMBER.
We will try again to visit Paluma Dam. Our last visit there was in February 2016, when we explored a loop through the forest on the dam’s eastern side. This time, we will walk across the dam wall and take a track along the western side of the dam.
Meeting time/place: 9.15 am at the Village Green in Paluma Village, leaving from there at 9:30 to travel to Paluma Dam. Turn left off the Bruce Hwy into Barrett Road, just north of Ollera Creek and, about 4 km further, take the signed turnoff left to Mt Spec/Paluma. The Paluma Village Green is the park at the intersection of Mount Spec Road and Smith Crescent. About 5 km after leaving Paluma Village, take the signed turnoff to the right, onto the gravel road to Paluma Dam – the distance from that intersection to the carpark and camping area is about 7 km. Allow about 1.5 hr to reach Paluma Village from the northern outskirts of Townsville, and another 20 min or so to get to Paluma Dam.
Current campsite restrictions: TAKE CARE when driving near the dam as maintenance work is being conducted at the camping ground on weekdays and there may be unexpected obstructions. People wishing to camp at Paluma Dam will need to book a campsite at the Townsville City Council’s on-line site and also note the current camping time restrictions.
What to bring: Morning tea, lunch, WATER*, birdwatching and walking gear (track may be rough underfoot), insect repellent, and whatever else you might need. *Paluma Village has issues with its water supply at the moment, so please don’t rely on obtaining drinking water from taps at the Village Green.
